Canada’s poor business innovation performance – urgent science, technology and innovation challenge

In the world of science, technology and innovation, Canada is lagging behind its international competitors. Private-sector investment in research and development have been hardest hit in a recent State of the Nation report – Canada’s spending is 36 per cent that of the top five performing countries in this area.

While business innovation lagged, our universities and leading researchers are performing above the world average. The sheer number of students enrolled in post-secondary education (in proportion to our population) as well as the numbers of doctoral degrees in science and engineering have built our country’s talent pool.

It’s time for L&D and organizational development professionals to tap into the home-grown talent and forge partnerships to make a difference in Canada’s business innovation.
